Young Filmmakers Program
Eligibility and Details
Who can apply?
Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 18 and have been personally affected by the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires.
This includes:
Losing your home or being displaced
Living in temporary housing due to fire / smoke damage
Having your family directly impacted by wildfires
Losing a community space of significance to you, church, theater, school, camp, etc.
If you’re unsure whether your experience qualifies, feel free to reach out to us at matt@ashestofilms.org — we’re happy to talk and would love to hear from you.
Applicants are not eligible to apply if they have attended the Ashes to Films Young Filmmakers program previously, or if they have attended any NYFA programs before.
What kind of film should I make?
Totally up to you!
The incredible instructors will guide you through how to write a script and bring your film to life so don’t worry too much if you don’t know yet know what you want your film to be about.
We’re looking for short narrative films — stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Your film can be inspired by your personal experiences, completely fictional, or somewhere in between.
It does not need to be about the fires.
They will be 2-3 minutes long and WITHOUT sound - so think about how you’d like to tell your story without dialog - you can use sound effects and music when editing but the day of shooting will be without dialog.
What does the program include?
If selected, you’ll participate in a free, 6 day filmmaking workshop hosted by the New York Film Academy (NYFA)
Orientation - July 21st , 2026
Classes and shoot - July 27–August 1, 2026
You’ll:
Learn the basics of directing, writing, and shooting
Work with real equipment and instructors
Write, direct, shoot work and edit your own film
Receive a $500 grant to help fund your project
Receive lunch each day
Screen your film at the Ashes To Films Festival.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. The program is completely free, including instruction, equipment access, and lunch.
How do I apply?
Complete the online application here by June 30, 2026. You’ll need to:
Answer a few questions
Submit a 2–3 minute video explaining why you want to make your film
We’ll walk you through how to upload your video to YouTube as ‘unlisted’ so you can share the link with us.
What if I’ve never made a film before?
No problem! This program is designed for beginners — all you need is enthusiasm and a story to tell. The instructors at The New York Film Academy will teach you everything else.
Can I apply with a friend or team?
This is an individual application — we’re selecting young filmmakers based on their personal stories and vision. You’ll collaborate during the workshop, but you must apply on your own.
Do I need to make a film about the fire?
Not at all. While your story might be influenced by what you’ve experienced, your film can be about anything that matters to you. The goal is to support your creative voice — not to limit your expression.
What if I need special accommodations?
We welcome all filmmakers. The NYFA campus is ADA accessible, and we’ll do our best to support any additional needs. You can let us know in the application or email info@ashestofilms.org directly.
What if I don’t have a a ride?
Please let us know if you have any issues with transportation. We’ll do our best to find a solution.
When will I find out if I’ve been selected?
Selections will be announced by July 10, 2026 via email. Be sure to check the email you listed in your application!
Who can I contact if I have more questions?
