Who can apply?

Applicants must be between the ages of 14 and 18, live in California, and have been personally affected by a wildfire. This includes:

  • Losing your home or being displaced

  • Living in temporary housing due to fire / smoke damage

  • Having your family directly impacted by wildfires

  • Losing a community space of significance to you, church, theater, school, camp, etc.

If you’re unsure whether your experience qualifies, feel free to reach out to us at info@ashestofilms.org — we’re happy to talk and would love to hear from you.

What kind of film should I submit an idea for?

We’re looking for short narrative films — stories with a beginning, middle, and end. Your film can be inspired by your personal experiences, completely fictional, or somewhere in between. It does not need to be about the fires.

They will be 2-3 minutes long and WITHOUT sound - so think about how you’d like to tell your story without dialog - you can use sound effects and music when editing but the day of shooting will be without dialog.

The films should be about resilience, hope and overcoming adversity.

What’s all this “film about resilience” talk?

Every great story—whether it’s about Spider-Man saving the world or finding the courage to ask someone out—is about overcoming adversity. It’s about a character who wants something, faces a challenge, and fights through it.

What matters is the emotional journey. The hero can be anyone—you, a robot, a lost cardboard box trying to find its way home to Boxville - as long as they grow, struggle, and come out stronger from the journey!

These films are about resilience. About getting back up when it’s hard. That’s what we want to see.

Example: Maybe your character gets cut from their soccer team but finds a new passion for music—or a robot who’s afraid of messing up keeps trying until it builds something amazing.

Try to keep your story simple enough to actually film. (So… no plane crashes or space battles unless you’re super creative with how you show them!)

You can always change your mind after you apply!

  • Describe your film idea

  • Submit a 2–3 minute video explaining why you want to make your film

We’ll walk you through how to upload your video to YouTube as Unlisted so you can share the link with us.

What if I’ve never made a film before?

No problem! This program is designed for beginners — all you need is enthusiasm and a story to tell. Our instructors will teach you everything else.

Can I apply with a friend or team?

This is an individual application — we’re selecting young filmmakers based on their personal stories and vision. You’ll collaborate during the workshop, but you must apply on your own.

Do I need to make a film about the fire?

Not at all. While your story might be influenced by what you’ve experienced, your film can be about anything that matters to you. The goal is to support your creative voice — not to limit your expression.

What if I need special accommodations?

We welcome all filmmakers. The NYFA campus is ADA accessible, and we’ll do our best to support any additional needs. You can let us know in the application or email info@ashestofilms.org directly.

What if I don’t have a a ride?

No worries - let us know - we will figure it and will find a way to get you there.

When will I find out if I’ve been selected?

Selections will be announced by July 10, 2025 via email. Be sure to check the email you listed in your application!
